“Product Designer” is an interesting title these days. When I hear of it, I usually assume we are describing a software designer who is product oriented. Or, a pixel designer with a good big picture sense. To most, it still aligns closer with industrial design: one who crafts objects of everyday use. I just find this shift interesting, now, to the main attraction:

Overload viewer with cute in general.
Be curious with something I actually care about.
Have crap tons of fun.

I love it when the user experience includes a good sense of humor.

Forever Carded

Recently, my dad sent me in the gas station store to buy a lottery ticket while he was pumping gas. The cashier gave me a look and carded me. I am 21, the lotto age is 18, and apparently I look 12 (as per the cashier’s guess).

Maybe I can still get away with buying child versions of everything.

In bed for 2 hours. Can’t sleep due to having to get up every 5 minutes to drink water. Dry throat sucks. Dry air doesn’t help.

Buy humidifier. Picked this one because it had the lowest price tag for the good review threshold I need. Kind of looks like Mushu from Mulan. Charming.

Going to be both cranky and unproductive all week if this keeps up. Seriously, lack of sleep on top of thinking over a cold?

I realllllllyyyy can’t wait to move out of Pittsburgh!

Back in high school, I had a good friend who kept one song to heart. He loved that song. It captured his pervasive positive attitude and his ability to keep moving no matter what perfectly. This song was Destiny Child’s Lose My Breath. The line he kept singing?

Can you keep up, can you keep up baby boy?

Who cares if he was a straight guy singing this song out-loud during lunch in the physics classroom. (It struck me a little weird at first too!) Nobody cared! Haters going to hate, gators going to gait, this friend of mine never strayed from his next true calling.

I admit, sometimes, I get lost in the interwebs browsing art and design of other brilliant students. I get lost comparing my work to theirs, thinking that I wish I had that sense of pop, or that mastery of letterform, or that keen sense of grid. Why wasn’t I any good? (I do the same when I sit next to a pretty girl, why isn’t my face as striking as hers? Why can’t I just suck it up and put on some make-up? Sigh.)

But you know what? I just need to stay focused. My path and style is different from theirs. My work is interesting, and maybe only interesting, because of some quirks rolled into my distinct, hard to explain background. It gives me an edge, a drive, and in return, I won’t have the same skill sets. We may be applying for the same jobs, but, in the end, it comes down to fit. Maybe someone will love me, the strange artist-with-a-thing-for-cute-gone-interaction-designer-advocate-for-the-users-with-empathy-and-affect-ingrained-in-her-personality. Something like that!

This is the reminder I need every once in awhile. The only person I need to strive to keep up with is ME, and my next true calling.

Epilogue Sadly, I haven’t talked to this guy in years, but I still aim to be like him.

understanding me, understanding 'success'

First shared thoughts of the new year.

Success is relative. What I define as ‘mission accomplished’ may only seem like a shy first step toward the right direction. Sure, I do enjoy being informed by the possibilities, some are enticing! But too much pushing on any frontier is really.. aggravating. You become a nuisance. I operate via what makes me happiest. I don’t operate on this never ending quest for a reel of accomplishments, especially if these said accomplishments would case grief.

This has to do with me. I’m the type of creative who likes to be briefed completely and then left in my box for a little bit to think. Tell me everything about the problem and I’ll do my best to solve it. But during my thinking phrase, I HATE to be rushed. Twists are understandable, but that sort of pressure where I am told to hurry has the opposite effect.

If I am able to work to my own content, then I am happiest. When I am happiest, I create best.

The greatest takeaway from 2010 is the greater idea of fit. There are endless possibilities and time is limited. It’s completely worth it to front-load the work, ensuring that the relationship I am forging is worthwhile. When I am with the right people and the right environment, great things happen. Also, if that means I phase out things that aren’t worth it anymore, don’t be surprised or offended.
